What is an au pair

"Au pair" is a french expression meaning "at the same level" - the expression is used because an au pair is supposed to be treated as a member of the family and not as a servant. This means that an au pair will not be employed in the traditional meaning of the word. An international agreement, signed by several countries, says that an au pair is a person who joins a host family to help around the house and look after children. In return the au pair is to receive board and lodgings plus pocket money and must also be given the opportunity to study the language and culture of the host country. Those were the official explanations. As most au pairs and host families will tell you and au pair arrangement is basically a question of mutual benefits - the host families need a pair of helping hands around the house and benefit from the assistance they get from their au pair, the au pairs wish to experience a different country and benefit from having every opportunity to do that while having a place to live as well as receiving pocket money in return for their help.
