FAQ

What if I get homesick?

It is only natural to feel homesick at the beginning of your stay in Europe, but for those with enough maturity, this passes quickly. If you have serious doubts about being able to live away from home and friends for an extended period of time, wait until you are more comfortable with the idea.

I would like to go to Europe as an Au Pair, but the only experience I have is babysitting. Should I still apply?

Certainly, the more experience you have, the better your chances of placement are. However, there are other qualities that are also important for placement, such as maturity, responsibility, an interest in cultural enrichment and a sincere desire to work with children. If you feel you have some of these qualities, please submit your application. We will do our best to find you an appropriate family.

I do not speak the language of my target country should I apply?

Yes, we can usually match you with a family who speaks English, German or French. You will find that you will pick up the language quite quickly in a total immersion situation such as living with a host family as an au pair. There is no better way to learn a language than to go to a country where it is spoken. If you don't speak English, German or French, it would be difficult. So you should spend as much time as possible sharpening your skills before your departure to the Europe.

I do not have my driver’s license yet. Can I still apply?

You may still apply, but it is necessary that you have a valid driver's license before you can start to work as an au pair in Europe. If you do not have a valid license, you will need to take your test as soon as possible. For safety reasons it is essential you are an experienced, responsible driver and will feel comfortable driving in Europe.

Do I have the opportunity to study?

As part of the au pair program regulations all au pairs must enroll in a post-secondary study program during their year in Europe. This is a great way for you to meet other au pairs as well as European of your own age.

Why do I have to apply through an agency in my own country to become an au pair?

Every country has specific visa requirements which are constantly changing. An au pair agency in your own country can assist you with current visa regulations and can inform you which countries they send au pairs to or receive au pairs from.
